Day 8 – Kytons (Sea prunes)

A quick blog update about a traditional food I had tried tonight.  A favourite of Irene’s, they’re called “Kytons” (Rough English spelling.)

In Nisga’a, they are called Y̓ans.  Y̓ans are dark brown in colour, and have a black skin surrounding them.  Under the top of the black skin, there are small seashells you have to pick out before eating them.  The skin is edible, but usually removed, although it is a lot of work.  These are only found in low tide, more into the middle of the ocean.  This makes them hard to find, and a delicacy.  Apparently extremely excellent when dipped in Oolichan grease.

The only way that you can describe the flavour is it tastes like the ocean.  What I can describe it as is similar to oysters, being kind of rubbery.  No aftertaste is left.
